Teaching the Elderly

Nowadays we are confronted with a growing group of elderly learners, not only in courses aimed specifically at the older generation but also in our general courses. What do we have to take into consideration when teaching them? Our elderly learners are highly motivated, loyal and enjoy coming to their courses. But how can we support them when they start having problems with vision, hearing or memory? The teacher's role is to keep them from feeling stressed, frustrated or that they may be a burden on the others. Instead, we want to integrate them and make them feel welcome. Research shows that some of their problems can be resolved immediately just by changing their classroom position or by using a different coloured pen on the board. However, experience shows that teachers tend to face more problems than just these.

In this workshop we will have a brief look at what the experts are saying before sharing our own experiences and coming up with ideas to optimize our teaching strategies to keep our elderly learners motivated.
