Religion in American Society - Heritage and Traditions

This lecture will evaluate the impact of different religious traditions on American society, politics, and culture. It will look at the historical context of religious transfer to the United States, especially at the Calvinist-Puritan heritage, the country’s self-understanding as a chosen people, and its "Manifest Destiny" for expansionism. The constitutional basis for the emergence of religious pluralism as well as the specific "American" religious traditions in the New World and the role of the black church will also be addressed.
