Rising to the challenge of multi-lingual classes

Teaching multi-lingual, multi-cultural language classes can be very challenging. Added to the usual mix of ages and social and professional backgrounds in the classroom is a variety of mother tongues and cultures which can make for an extremely rich learning environment, but also one which is potentially difficult to handle, and may challenge many of the assumptions we teachers make about teaching.
In this session we will explore issues such as cultural attitudes and their influence on how people learn and communicate, as well as language-related areas, such as "interlanguage". Above all we will look at practical ways for teachers to manage multi-lingual classes through, for example, increasing cultural sensitivity within a group, classroom management and dealing with mistakes.
