The History of the Irish Border: From Henry VIII to the Present Day (ab B1+)

Centuries of conflict in Ireland ended in partition in the 1920s which resulted in a land border between Ireland and Northern Ireland; an international frontier with customs controls. Military infrastructure was later added when the border became a frontline in the so-called Troubles (1969-1995). Thanks to the arrival of the European Single Market in 1993 and the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 the border is now invisible. However, recent uncertainty surrounding Brexit has given rise to new anxieties along the 500-km long frontier. What locals fear most is a return to a hard border with serious disruptions to everyday life and a return to violence if physical barriers reappear between the two states.
